NASA buys Russian toilet system for ISS
[wmv]http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/language_tips/auvideo/2007-08/28/../../../att/site1/20070828/0013729e42d2083db96501.wmv[/wmv]
At the Johnson Space Center in Houston, engineers are getting ready for a new toilet system. The Russian-designed system will be installed next year, well in time for the expansion of the International Space Station in 2009.
NASA has signed a contract to purchase a toilet system designed in Russia for the International Space Station's planned expansion.
The new system features privacy enclosure and is similar to one already in use at the International Space Station in the Zvezda Service Module.
Experts say designing a bathroom for use in space is a lot more complicated than most people think.
Jim Broyan, NASA habitability hardware manager, said, "Designing and building a toilet in space is very difficult. It's been sometimes referred to, it's easy to do here on the ground, maybe the equivalent of putting your toilet on the ceiling and seeing how easy it was to use because you're working against gravity in space in the absence of gravity."
The most fundamental difference between a bathroom on earth and one in space is that in space, both men and women use a funnel for urine collection. The funnel is attached to a flexible hose, which can be emptied into a waste collection system.
The funnel, moreover, can be used in a standing position, or be attached to a commode by a pivoting mounting bracket for use in a sitting position.
Two foot restraints are employed in the current model on board each space shuttle. They will also be used for the new Russian model.
As with the current system, the new toilet will separate urine into various components and, through a series of filters, collect water for re-use.
Since there's no plunger in space, astronauts will be given rudimentary lessons in the plumbing structure, in case the system is clogged up.

US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales res

Embattled US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has announced his resignation. But he has not given a reason for his sudden departure. The move ends months of questions about his competence and accusations from the Congress that he politicized the office to benefit President George W. Bush.
Gonzales announced he will resign as Attorney General next month. He thanked President George W. Bush for his friendship, saying despite his own troubles, he considers it a great privilege to have led the Justice Department.
Gonzales said, "I met with President Bush and informed him of my decision to conclude my government service as attorney general of the US, effective as of September 17th, 2007."
Meanwhile Bush lashed out at Gonzales' critics. The president has stood by his friend and finally accepted his resignation over the weekend.
Bush said, "After months of unfair treatment, Judge Gonzales decided to resign his position and I accept his decision. It is sad that we live in a time when a talented and honorable person, like Alberto Gonzales is impeded from doing important work because his good name was dragged through the mud for political reasons."
Bush leaves Washington next Monday for Australia, and Gonzales' replacement might not be named by then. The government says Solicitor General Paul Clement will be acting Attorney General until a replacement is found.
Gonzales worked for Bush when he was governor of Texas in the 1990s. He served as White House lawyer in Bush's first presidential term before becoming the first Hispanic attorney general in 2005.

Beijing tests new No. 5 subway line
[wmv]http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/language_tips/auvideo/2007-08/30/../../../att/site1/20070830/0013729c00250840d51f05.wmv[/wmv]

Beijing's new Number 5 Subway line is now being tested.
It's scheduled to open in September. Beijing's first north-south underground line is equipped new technology for the upcoming Olympics.
The Number 5 line is almost ready for the Olympics.
There are LCD screens on the platforms and in the trains with schedule information -- AND they can broadcast live TV signals. So during next year's games, passengers on the way to an event won't miss any of the action while they're traveling.
This is Beijing's first subway line equipped with an integrated information system. Passengers can check out the latest train schedule and city information and of course the Olympics.
The subway line has its own individual style.
The newly finished Lama Temple Station is a fusion of east and west, with Chinese-style pillars and stairways inside. There's even a Chinese chess board engraved on the ground.
Safety and convenience are also a major part of the design.
All platforms have glass walls to prevent passengers' falling onto the railway. The carriage floor is made of non-slip materials. And mobile phone signals can be picked up on every inch of the line.
At interchange stations there are moving walkways for passengers transferring to a different line. And there's braille on the stairways for the blind.
The 30-kilometer line is scheduled to officially open in September.

For the Chinese athletics team, the World Athletics Championships is considered a test event in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games.
The biggest winners at the championships this time were the U.S. team, who had every reason to celebrate at the closing ceremony. They topped the medal standings with 14 golds, four silvers and eight bronzes, far ahead of Kenya and Russia.
China managed 11th place in the competition, and their highlight was without doubt Liu Xiang's gold medal in the men's 110m hurdles. He became the first man from China to win gold in the event at a world championship.
Another historic breakthrough for China came when Zhou Chunxiu won the silver medal in the women's marathon, the first medal in that event for China in world championships history.
And Zhang Wenxiu won a bronze in the women's hammer throw, becoming China's first athlete to stand on the hammer throw podium in the World Championships. With one gold, one silver and one bronze, China achieved its best results since 1993 at the world athletics championships, boosting their confidence ahead of the Beijing Olympic Games. But despite the achievements, a large gap still remains between China and other top athletics countries.

The third Global Youth Leaders summit has been held in Dalian, a coastal city in Liaoning province, in the run-up to the Summer Davos.
More than 200 young leaders from politics, business and culture attended the Tuesday event. The meeting had speakers giving speeches from the center of the hall, not on the front-and-center podiums other meetings traditionally use. The young leaders discussed development, poverty, value and social issues.
The global youth leadership forum was founded by Klaus Schwab, the chairman of the World Economic Forum in 2004. It is one of the most important parts of the forum, granting one of the more coveted prizes of the youth summit.
Every year, the forum selects 200 to 300 youth leaders from 35-hundred candidates around the world.

The Special Olympics are just around the corner. As Shanghai gets ready for the event, visitors can stroll down to a park in the downtown Hongkou district, where they will meet a talented harmonica player who also happens to be mentally impaired.
Wu Mengze often comes to this park to play the harmonica. What's more, he does so as an accompaniment to a choir. Over the past two years, his improving skills have attracted quite a fanbase. And his musical talents don't go unnoticed by other members of the choir.
choir member, said, "We take care of each other. We don't discriminate toward him. His harmonica skills are even better than mine."
Although Wu can play over 100 harmonica pieces, he cannot read musical scores. Instead, he's spent the past two years memorizing them. Wu says that practicing harmonica has opened up his mind. And he has a dream to prove it.
Wu Mengze, harmonica player & choir member, said, "I wish to stage a singing and harmonica playing concert."
In addition to this long-term wish, he expects to watch several matches during the upcoming Special Olympics in Shanghai.

In Beirut, thousands of Lebanese lined roads and cheered troops after defeating the militants at the Nahr el-Bared refugee camp. The three-month-long battle is the country's worst internal fighting since its civil war from 1975 to 1990.
Crowds have converged on the main north-south highway in Lebanon to welcome the troops as the soldiers traveled to Beirut. The army started withdrawing units from the refugee camp of Nahr el-Bared in northern Lebanon on Sunday. Defense Minister Elias Murr says over 200 Fatah Islam militants have been killed.
The fighting between the Lebanese army and Fatah al-Islam broke out in mid-May. At least 20 civilians were killed in the standoff and more than 30 thousand refugees fled the camp.

Belgium has unveiled its new zero-emissions polar base. The energy self-sufficient station will be a model for future research stations.
The "Princess Elisabeth" station was inaugurated in a Brussels warehouse by Crown Prince Philippe. The station is to be used to study the climate changes in South Pole with the least possible impact on the terrain. Solar panels and large wind turbines will provide the energy sources.
The station will be taken apart and transported by ship to the South Pole later this month. The Belgian government has decided to consider China as a partner for future scientific Antarctic exploration and research.

Italian tenor Pavarotti dies at age 71
[wmv]http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/language_tips/auvideo/2007-09/07/../../../att/site1/20070907/0013729e42d2084b4e6c39.wmv[/wmv]
One of the great voices of the age has fallen silent. Italian opera star Luciano Pavarotti is dead. Hailed by many as the greatest tenor of his generation, Pavarotti died in the early hours of Thursday in his hometown of Modena. Word comes from his manager Terri Robson.
Pavarotti, was released from hospital late last month after undergoing more than two weeks of tests and treatment. He was at home in the company of family and close friends when he died.
Pavarotti underwent surgery last July to remove a pancreatic tumor. Cancer surgery forced him to cancel the remaining dates of his 2006 farewell opera tour.
The 71-year-old star vowed to return to the stage this year. But he did not re-emerge after his surgery. A number of planned appearances in the past few months were cancelled.
The rotund, black-bearded tenor known as "Big Luciano" helped bring opera to the masses. He performed to vast stadium audiences around the world.
He rocketed to fame following a stand-in appearance at London's Covent Garden in 1963. Soon critics were gushing about his voluminous voice.
Luciano Pavarotti said, "I make people happy. I know God has done something special for me. He kissed my vocal cords, and that I know."
Pavarotti's last public performance came at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Turin in February 2006. He sang Puccini's aria "Nessun Dorma".
